The list, which includes the travel publisher’s top 10 cities and countries, heavily featured Europe, proving that the continent will be a hot destination for the coming year. Beating tough competition from countries such as St Lucia and cities such as Toronto, Europe has plenty to boast about in 2015.
Locations were chosen using a number of criteria, putting destinations forward for hosting special events, completing recent developments, or for simply being underrated.
Europe’s top destinations for 2015
Featuring six times in the top 10 cities, Europe managed a tremendous achievement, which is sure to attract many to visit during 2015, such as those on deluxe European river cruises. Although topped by Washington D.C., the list was dominated by Europe, featuring Switzerland’s Zermatt, Bulgaria’s Plovdiv, and Austria’s Vienna.
Zermatt was featured at number four due to its unique appeal to those looking to hike in the mountains, as well as celebrating the resort’s 150th birthday next year. Similarly, Vienna which was placed in the list at number eight, was chosen for its excellent selection of upcoming special events and exhibitions, which includes the 2015 Eurovision song contest.
Europe also featured twice in the top 10 countries list, with Serbia, one of Emerald Cruises’ destinations, coming in at number seven. Described by Lonely Planet as one of Europe’s best kept secrets, this beautiful country boasts exciting festivals, wonderful cities, superb skiing and great value for money. Romania also featured in the Lonely Planet’s top 10 best value destinations for 2015, another of Emerald Cruises’ popular destinations.
