Your seasonal guide

When to cruise?

Generally, most Western Mediterranean cruises set sail around April through to late October and November, the Northern hemisphere’s spring, summer, and autumn (fall) seasons.

What time of year you plan to cruise depends on what you seek from your holiday, whether it’s the beach life and ocean swimming, specific events and festivities, or simply avoiding the more crowded months and higher temperatures.

Spring in bloom

April heralds early spring in Europe, offering pleasantly warm, comfortable temperatures, exquisite spring flowers bursting into life, and less visitors at major landmarks.

May to June transitions into summertime, so expect beautiful sunny weather, with air and sea temperatures starting to rise. This is a marvelous time for al fresco dining and taking in some of Europe’s most glorious sights, as the summer crowds have yet to descend. Nature is now in full bloom, with vineyards lush and destinations vivid with bougainvillea and other native flowers.

Sunkissed Summer

By July and August, the height of summer is in full swing. Expect dry, hot days, with endless sunshine and generally the lowest chances of rain, while the sea is enticingly warm for swimming. With higher temperatures, plan activities for early morning and late afternoon, and relish longer, sultry evenings as you linger onshore.

Take the plunge into the warm ocean from the Marina Platform of your award-winning Emerald Cruises superyacht, or take a kayak out to explore the coast from a new perspective.

As this is peak season and a popular time to travel – Europeans typically tend to take the entire month of August off for their own holidays – crowds tend to swell over the summer, especially at major tourist attractions and on the coast.

September brings on late summer; days are warm and nights are balmy, if a little cooler than August and with the sea also lovely and warm, many regard this as the optimum time for swimming and watersports. As Europeans on holiday return home, you’ll enjoy more of a sense of calmer sightseeing at major attractions and at the beach.

A golden Autumn

October heralds the start of autumn, with vines turning golden and beach destinations taking on an end of season feel. With less crowds around, there’s more opportunity to relish some memorable local encounters, such as a DiscoverMORE tour exploring the heritage of Gozo (part of the Maltese archipelago) and a visit to local workshops, galleries, and culinary delights on the Mediterranean Crossroads itinerary. You’ll also likely enjoy plenty of warm sunny days, but evening temperatures may dip and there’s an increased likelihood of rain.

November’s temperatures still remain mild along the coast, but it’s generally warmer the further south you cruise. Rain is also inevitable, but ports of call and main attractions see fewer visitors around this time of year, giving you the chance to truly enjoy local interactions and experience the resident lifestyle.

Seasonal festivities & natural wonders

Your cruise may also coincide with a seasonal festivity or event, where you’ll have an opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture, or a memorable natural occurrence. As the West Mediterranean is predominately comprised of Catholic countries, there are many opportunities to experience local religious festivities.

The most important traditional holiday is Easter (falling in late March or April); Spain is especially noted for its mesmerizing Holy Week processions.

Other highlights include the Feast of the Assumption on August 15th, which is typically marked across the West Mediterranean region with processions, feasting, and floral decorations. Additionally, there is All Saints’ Day on November 1st.

France commemorates the historic storming of the Bastille on July 14th, Bastille Day, with fireworks and outdoor events.

Wine enthusiasts may opt to coincide their voyage around September when the European vineyard harvests get underway. During spring and summer months, you may also be fortunate to spot resident whales at sea, especially in Spanish waters.
